| Almost 100 off-road race teams from Australia, North America and New Zealand will arrive in the resort town in late August to contest the Asset Finance Taupo 1000, a two-day 1000 kilometre endurance race that has become the sport’s Australasian flagship event. International teams from the USA and Australia head the strongest entry list for the in many years. Many in the sport are convinced this year’s race will be a record-breaker with 92 or more cars and trucks taking their place on the grid when the race starts. Race organiser Tony Saelman says though records of entries in the first couple of events are not available, the 2011 entry is certainly the biggest in the years he has been involved in the race.
Every mechanical component was stripped and inspected under the guidance of the Stag 4x4 team to ensure that the machine would go the distance. The project was based around keeping the car as standard as possible, whilst also making it safe and reliable. Being a road legal machine it put issues into the rebuild, particularly with the roll cage. The point of call for that part went to Motorsport Services who not only kept the driver and navigator safe, but they built an intricate cage around a third seat – a place where passengers would be able to sample the racing for real. Sooty then replaced all of the electrics loom-by-loom using the correct equipment from Hella New Zealand to ensure the job was done properly. There was no way they would allow the task to be done by twisting wires together and taping them up! From terminals to lights, it really was a surgical procedure from start to finish. But just like the roll cage, the electrical side needed to not only be legal, but an improvement over the old original equipment. LED tail lights, reverse lamps and amber dust lamps (part of the rules for off-roaders) now adorn the rear, whilst new semi-sealed headlamps and day running lights were fitted to the front. Even the side indicators were replaced with LED lamps.
