Racing Legend Meets Lighting Icon

Date: 7 July 2010

Aston Martin Racing races the 2010 Le Mans Series with improved Hella headlamps in Lippstadt, July 2010.

Following its Le Mans Series title in 2009, the Aston Martin Racing team is again relying on Hella lighting and electronics for its LMP1 racing cars in 2010.  Based on the "Luminator Xenon Compact", Hella has developed a new lighting concept jointly with Aston Martin Racing.

The headlamp has been re-engineered to suit the front-end of the Aston Martin  and light output has been improved and the weight reduced by two kilograms.

"Events, such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, often involve racing at night, in twilight or in poor visibility,” said team principal, George Howard-Chappell. “At speeds of more than 300 kph, we need headlights that can illuminate the track up to 500 metres ahead.  The significant weight saving with the new Luminator-based lighting design is also important, as minimising weight is an on-going challenge for the team."

In 2010 Aston Martin Racing is competing in the American Le Mans Series, the Le Mans Series and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.  In contrast to Formula One races that typically go over a distance of up to 300 kilometres, Le Mans Series each go over 1,000 kilometres and up to 3000km in the case of Le Mans.

The Luminator Compact Xenon with integrated electronic ballast is a top-quality product from the Hella range of auxiliary headlamps.  With its high-boost reflector, the 12V headlamp provides a white xenon light that is almost as bright as day and has a range of almost 500 metres.  High-boost means that pure aluminium is used to metallise the reflecting layer under a high vacuum.  The protective layer on the reflector, which is just a few nanometres thick, ensures that the high headlamp light output is maintained permanently.  The auxiliary headlamp''s housing and bulb holder are made of extremely robust and shock-resistant zinc diecasting.

No wonder then that the Luminator proves performance, endurance and quality even under heavy-duty racing conditions, just like on an off-road car or a truck.
